Margaret Calkin James 1895-1985, calligrapher, graphic designer, textile printer, watercolour painter and printmaker lived in Hampstead until 1970.
She opened 'The Rainbow Workshops' in Bloomsbury Street WC1 in 1920, one of the first galleries in the UK started by a woman to promote art, design and craft.
A full account of her life and work is given in 'At the Sign of the Rainbow' by Betty Miles. This is complemented by her own collection of work now in the public archive at the Victoria and Albert museum. Her work for London Transport can be seen at the London Transport Museum.
