The Belle Epoque is a period of French history that is conventionally dated as starting roughly with the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 and lasting until the onset of World War 1 and its horrors in 1914.

Paris, at its heady, uncertain best has been the capital of that era of wonderful cultural flowering, when masterpieces in art, literature, music, dance and architecture were created. This is the reason why it was named in French and all surrounding countries in Europe were, in different degrees and shapes for sure, influenced by it. Ground-breaking artists like Dumas,Maupassant,Zola,Proust,Massenet, Godard, among others, gained world recognition. As for music, in 1887 Camille Saint Saens invites three well-known French wind soloists to join him for a series of musical events in St.Petersburg. They were the flautist Paul Taffanel, the oboist Georges Gillet and the clarinetist Charles Turban.

In 1879 ,Georges Gillet, following the setting-up of the Woodwind Chamber Music Society, started an enduring friendship with Paul Taffanel that lasted over 15 years.

Today's concert aims at presenting a group of original scores, full of that euphoria and lightheartedness so typical of the Belle Epoque era, that were all created in that period and in nearly every case dedicated to the above-mentioned performers.
