“The Making of an Englishman”
Fred Uhlman’s Journey from Stuttgart to Hampstead
Fred Uhlman, born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1901, came to Britain in 1936 as a racial and political refugee from Nazism. He made a career as an artist, then as a writer, with the short novel Reunion (1971).
He settled in Downshire Hill, Hampstead, with his wife Diana, the daughter of a British right-wing aristocrat. Uhlman tells his life story in his volume of memoirs, The Making of an Englishman (1960).
