This hat was purchased by Charlton for three guineas in a shop on Bond Street in December 1939. She bought it in preparation for sitting for Stanley Spencer in April 1940. She sat for the portrait every day for two or three weeks. Titled Daphne, Spencer's portrait is owned by the Tate and can be seen here.
