The last private residents of Burgh House were Captain Bambridge and his wife Elsie, daughter of the author Rudyard Kipling. In 1937, Kipling died and Elsie used her inheritance to buy Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire. The house went up for auction, and due to the impending war, did not find another buyer. Thereafter Hampstead Borough Council, and later Camden Council, took on the lease.
