Helen Allingham was renowned for her so-called 'portraits of cottages', which captured a sense of an idealised and unchanging rural England. This painting depicts Heather Cottage in Sandhills, near Witley in Surrey, where the artist lived with her family from 1881 until their move to Hampstead in 1888.
