Branch Hill Pump, Hampstead (circa 1830)

In the 1800s Hampstead was well known for its springs of clear water that were celebrated by the popular spa and accompanying 'long room' built in the early 18th century. Collecting water at one of these springs like the one pictured, would have been a familiar activity for local people and visitors alike. The source of water for Branch Hill Pump may have been the Westbourne River, which has its origin at nearby Whitestone Pond, eventually running into the Thames at Chelsea.
