Nancy Carline (née Higgins) was born in London in 1909. Between 1929 and 1932, she studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks and Allan Gwynne-Jones. She met her husband, fellow artist Richard Carline, in 1934. They had two children together. During the 1930s, Carline exhibited with the London Group. Carline lived in Hampstead until her husband's death in 1980, after which she moved to Oxford.
