Alice Ashley on a Garden Seat (1937)

Alice Ashley was the daughter of eminent architect H. V. Ashley, who was responsible for designing many buildings in Hampstead, including some on Frognal Gardens. She was a friend of the artist and regularly sat for him. In this painting, Ashley is knitting in a garden with a book open on her lap.
